Lorry Smash Closes Key South East London Rail and Road Links
A lorry smashed into a bridge in Catford today, halting Thameslink train services and causing major disruption across South East London. The incident forced road closures and snarled traffic on the busy A205 South Circular.
Train Chaos as Services Suspended
Thameslink trains between London Blackfriars and Sevenoaks have been suspended after the collision. Some trains were diverted between Elephant & Castle and Shortlands to ease the chaos. National Rail warns delays between Peckham Rye and Bromley South will last all day.
No Injuries but Travel Nightmare
The Metropolitan Police confirmed nobody was hurt. “Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries,” they said. But commuters face a travel headache with road closures still in place and heavy congestion stretching from Catford Hill to Ravensbourne Park.
Alternative Routes Advised for Commuters
Thameslink urged passengers to use alternative stations to avoid delays:
- Travel to Bromley North if heading for Bromley South or Shortlands.
- Use Beckenham Junction instead of Ravensbourne station.
- Go to Lower Sydenham if travelling to Beckenham Hill or Bellingham.
- Catford travellers should switch to Catford Bridge station.
- Crofton Park passengers are advised to use Honor Oak Park.
The London Fire Brigade is on site working to clear the stranded lorry. Police will keep road closures until the bridge is safe and clear. Stay tuned for updates as the situation unfolds.
