City Council Tackles Shocking Litter on Busy A2
Crews from Canenco, the city council’s waste team, launched a major cleanup of the A2 verges on Monday 2 October. The grim job wrapped up this Friday 13 October.
From Crisps to Car Bumpers – The Shocking Finds
Alongside the usual litter – crisp packets, chocolate wrappers, cans and bottles filled with suspiciously coloured liquid – workers hauled out scrapped car bumpers and lost number plates hidden in the undergrowth. Even clothing items like shirts and shoes were found abandoned on the roadside.
Council Blasts Drivers Who Dump Rubbish on High-Speed Road
Charlotte Cornell, cabinet member for waste, said: “This is back-breaking, grim work in a dangerous environment, with trucks hurtling just yards away. I’m sure residents will join me in thanking our crews for a job very well done.”
She slammed the reckless litterers: “It’s disappointing that taxpayers’ money must be spent cleaning up after this. Just because you’re speeding down the A2 doesn’t mean it’s OK to chuck rubbish or even parts of your wardrobe out the window. Laybys with bins are available along the route, or save your rubbish until you can dispose of it properly.”
Council Vows to Keep District Spotless
Cllr Cornell promised: “Keeping the district clean is a top priority. We’ll soon coordinate with highways authorities to set dates for the next big cleanup, making sure we do what’s needed to keep our roads tidy and safe.”
