A University College London Muslim student society has sparked outrage after paying tribute to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei following his reported death. The Ahlul-Bayt Islamic Society described his passing as an “unimaginable loss” and urged Shia Muslims in the West to “remain aware and ready.”

Controversial Tribute Praises Khamenei as a Religious Martyr

The UCL group posted a statement offering “sincere condolences” and prayers for Khamenei, referring to his death as “martyrdom” and saying the loss was felt across the entire Muslim world, or Ummah. The society’s mental health team even contributed to the post.

They insisted the tribute did not promote “incitement, endorsement of violence, or unlawful mobilisation.” The society compared Khamenei’s religious role to that of the Catholic Pope, framing the tribute as “lawful expression” defended by academic freedom and freedom of speech.

Public Figures Condemn the Tribute as Disgusting and Dangerous

  • James Price, a UCL alumnus and former government adviser, blasted the post as “disgusting” and called for UCL to “act appropriately.”
  • Author Dov Forman slammed the tribute as “extraordinary,” warning: “Universities cannot keep pretending this is just ‘student expression.’”

So far, UCL has remained silent on the growing controversy. The incident has reignited fierce debate over the limits of free expression on campus and the responsibilities universities have when politically charged content is shared by student groups.

Clash Over Campus Free Speech and Political Sensitivities

The debate continues as critics and the Ahlul-Bayt Islamic Society clash over what counts as acceptable expression on university grounds. With emotions high, all eyes remain on UCL to see how it will respond to this explosive controversy.
