Over 1,000 Artists Join Record-Breaking Tribute to Sir Lenny Henry
More than 1,000 artists from around the world have smashed records with their portraits of legendary actor and comedian Sir Lenny Henry. The massive event marked the 10th anniversary of Sky Arts’ hit competition, Portrait Artist of the Year, held at London’s Lindley Hall.
The 60-Minute Challenge: Paint Sir Lenny Live
Artists had just one hour to capture Sir Lenny’s likeness using acrylics on A3 canvases. About 200 painters showed up in person, travelling from places as far as Yorkshire and Canada. Meanwhile, 123 others tuned in online, including students from Art-K and schools involved in Sky Arts’ Access All Arts Week.
Gareth Reid, named Portrait Artist of the Decade, was on hand to share pro tips. “His guidance helped beginners get confident with portrait painting,” said organisers.
“Seeing 200 unique portraits by artists of all ages and skill levels was truly inspiring,” said Sir Lenny Henry. “I loved hearing their stories and connecting with the artists.”
Sky Arts Spotlights Britain’s Best Portrait Talent
For ten years, Portrait Artist of the Year has showcased the UK’s finest art talent. Judges Kate Bryan, Kathleen Soriano and Tai Shan Schierenberg have unearthed incredible artists. Last year’s winner, Morag Caister, earned a place in the National Portrait Gallery with her portrait of Sir Lenny.
Phil Edgar-Jones, Sky Arts Director, praised the artists’ amazing work under pressure. “We certainly spotted future stars at Lindley Hall,” he said.

2023 Competition Heats Up with Celebrity Sitters
The latest series is underway, with artists competing to win the 2023 crown. The competition is packed with star subjects, including Emma Freud, Richard Curtis, Fleur East, Ainsley Harriott, Susanna Reid, and many more.
Winners of each heat will get the chance to paint pop icon Emma Bunton in the semi-final. The finals will see the top three artists tasked with painting Dame Joan Bakewell — Portrait Artist of the Year royalty.
The 2023 champion will win a prestigious £10,000 commission to paint conservation legend Dr Jane Goodall DBE, unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery this December.
