Tragic Death After Scarf Caught in Beach Buggy Wheel in Havant
A woman has died following a horrific accident involving a 1970s-style blue beach buggy on North Street, Havant.
Scarf Trapped in Buggy Wheel
The 62-year-old passenger, Gillian Sandle from Hayling Island, was riding in the open-top buggy on Sunday afternoon when her scarf became entangled in the rear wheels. Passers-by spotted the incident and rushed to help, desperately trying to free her before emergency services arrived.
Emergency Response and Heartbreak
Paramedics were called just after 12.30pm. The road was shut off as crews treated Gillian at the scene. She was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham in a critical condition.
“We were called to reports of a woman injured while using an open-top vehicle,” a South Central Ambulance Service spokesperson said. “The 65-year-old had a scarf wrapped around her neck which became trapped in the vehicle. Despite rapid treatment and hospital care, she sadly died of her injuries on Sunday afternoon.”
Police Appeal for Information
Sergeant Melanie Adcock urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. “This took place at a busy time of day,” she said, highlighting the need for more details around the tragic event.
Members of the public who helped performed CPR at the scene before the ambulance arrived, but the injuries proved fatal despite desperate efforts.
