Chaos erupted on Balham High Road on Monday evening as a fierce kitchen fire tore through a flat in a three-storey block above station parade. Six fire engines and around 45 firefighters were scrambled to the scene after multiple emergency calls reported people trapped inside the smoke-filled building.
Trapped Residents Saved in Smoke Hoods
Emergency 999 operators guided the flat owner through crucial fire survival steps after they became trapped on the first floor engulfed in thick smoke. Fire crews, kitted out with breathing apparatus, rescued several residents wearing smoke hoods, leading them to safety.

London Ambulance Service’s paramedics, including the Hazardous Area Response Team, treated a number of people at the scene. This elite unit specialises in delivering critical medical aid in severe and complex emergencies.
