Knife-Wielding Arsonist Jailed After Violent Spree in Kent
Michael Bumstead, 21, from Romney Marsh, has been locked up for six and a half years after a shocking rampage involving attempted stabbing, arson, and assault on emergency workers.
Violent Attack in Ashford Car Park
On 15 June 2020, Bumstead had a blazing row with his ex-partner in a Hillbrow Lane car park, Ashford. Suddenly, he turned on a man sitting in a nearby van. Pulling out a long bread knife, he tried stabbing the victim through the open window.
Luckily, the man dodged the attack as Bumstead kicked the van and fled the scene. The victim immediately called the police.
Fuel Bombs and Police Assault Follow
Less than six months later, on 8 December 2020, Bumstead and two accomplices were caught filling a jerry can at a petrol station near Charing. Within the hour, they hurled petrol-soaked bottles at a property linked to Bumstead’s ex-partner, setting it ablaze.
Two Kent Police officers, investigating separate matters nearby, sprung into action. They tracked Bumstead to the village train station, where his violent streak escalated.
During his arrest, Bumstead knocked one officer to the ground and threatened to throw another onto the train tracks.
Police Praise Swift Justice
“These offences prove Bumstead is an unpredictable and dangerous man, and I am pleased this investigation has led to him being removed from the streets of Kent,” said PC Sophia Lateu, Kent Police’s lead investigator.
“No one should have to put up with threats or violence from a partner or ex-partner. If you are suffering abuse, contact Kent Police or confide in someone you trust so action can be taken.”
Bumstead pleaded guilty to attempted grievous bodily harm, arson, and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker at Canterbury Crown Court on 25 May 2021. On 21 July, he was sentenced to six and a half years in jail with an additional two years on licence.
