Essex Youth Project Slashes Risk of Gang Violence
The VVU teamed up with Essex Council of Voluntary Youth Services and Active Essex for an 18-month drive to support vulnerable kids in Essex, Southend, and Thurrock. Their weapon of choice? Detached youth workers offering safe activities for youngsters aged 10 to 14 at risk of youth violence and gang exposure.
Thousands of Youngsters Reached
- 4,934 children engaged through detached youth work
- 8,321 contacts made between youth workers and young people—3,387 repeats
- 1,850 hours of dedicated youth work delivered by pairs of staff across seven districts
- 637 sessions held at just 48p per weekly contact
These youth workers aren’t just keeping kids busy; they act as positive role models and provide crucial community safeguarding.
Trusted Local Partners at the Forefront
Local groups like Essex Boys and Girls Club, Bar’n’bus, Red Balloon Foundation, Essex YMCA, Homestart, Teen Talk, and others have become fixtures in parks and on high streets. Their presence has boosted community trust and delivered real results.
By linking activities in schools, community centres, and youth buildings with detached youth work, these organisations strengthen their grip as trusted adults making a real difference.
Community Collaboration Key to Success
Youth workers offer tailored support and advice through direct conversation. Working closely with community groups, councils, sports bodies, and the police has bolstered the safety net for vulnerable young people.
The project proves local knowledge and hands-on support can help steer at-risk kids away from gangs and violence, giving Essex youth a brighter future.
