Killer Found Guilty of PCSO Julia James’ Murder

A callous killer has been convicted of murdering Police Community Support Officer Julia James as she walked her dog in Aylesham. Callum Wheeler, 22, was found guilty by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court and now faces sentencing.

Tragic Final Walk Captured on Julia’s Smartwatch

Julia, 53, disappeared on Tuesday 27 April 2021 while walking her dog Toby near her home. Her smartwatch tracked her route along a footpath behind her house, then towards Ackholt Wood near Snowdown. The data showed she stopped suddenly where her body was later found at 4pm that day.

Paramedics declared Julia dead at the scene from a fatal head injury. Kent and Essex Serious Crime detectives launched a murder inquiry and discovered she was struck with a jack handle — a heavy railway tool.

Community Comes Together for Tireless Investigation

More than 1,100 officers scoured Aylesham and surrounding areas, interviewing 5,000 locals in door-to-door enquiries. Volunteers helped distribute leaflets urging witnesses to come forward. The public responded with over 1,400 tips. Police carried out fingertip searches and reviewed 6,700 hours of CCTV and dashcam footage.

Roadblocks stopped around 500 vehicles, while reconstructions of Julia’s last movements were released to jog memories. The hunt was relentless.

Dashcam Footage Snags Suspect

Dashcam and a local resident’s photo on the day after the murder proved crucial. Wheeler was spotted carrying a long object in a blue bag near the crime scene. His suspicious behaviour prompted the resident to alert police.

Wheeler vanished into nearby woods but was identified within hours of a public appeal and arrested at his home on Sunshine Avenue.

Forensic Evidence Seals Wheeler’s Fate

Wheeler denied the crime, but the jack handle wrapped in plastic was found in his bedroom. Forensic tests revealed his DNA and Julia’s on the weapon, her jacket, top, and wellington boots. The chances of the DNA matching anyone but Wheeler were astronomical.

CCTV from local cameras tracked Wheeler’s movements before and after the murder, piecing together his route.

Justice and Tribute

Wheeler was charged with murder on 10 May 2021 and now awaits sentencing. Kent Police Chief Constable Alan Pughsley paid tribute:

“Julia James was much loved by all who knew her, and our thoughts remain with those she left behind. The community’s kindness helped our officers through this tough time. We may never know why Wheeler committed this awful crime, but I hope Julia’s family can find some comfort in his conviction. Julia will never be forgotten, and an annual award in her name for Police Community Support Officer of the Year has been created.”

Detectives Praise Community’s Crucial Role

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Gavin Moss added:

“We left no stone unturned. This was a tough case with limited CCTV and leads, but the community’s support was vital. Public information helped identify Wheeler, leading to the DNA evidence that secured his conviction. I’m proud of everyone involved. I hope Julia’s family can now find some peace.”
