Jacqueline Ashberry, 61, of James Road in Kidderminster, was sentenced on Thursday, May 27, 2022, at Worcester Crown Court.
Ashberry became an unofficial caregiver for the elderly victim, a 25-year acquaintance, during which time she controlled her finances and scammed her of her life savings*.
The victim’s sons ultimately uncovered the scam and reported it to the authorities in April 2019, when the victim was 88 years old. Their concerns were sparked after learning that Ashberry had been charged with theft and fraud against another elderly person in 2019, for which she received a two-year suspended jail term.
Jacqueline Ashberry has a history of preying on vulnerable people, inflicting large financial losses and considerable anguish to both them and their families,” said Detective Constable James Green, officer in charge of the case for West Mercia Police.
“We are pleased with the heavy jail term, which will keep her from harming other vulnerable members of the community.”
We take all accusations of financial abuse and fraud very seriously and work hard to bring criminals to justice.
