Mystic Meg, Britain’s beloved astrologer, dies aged 81 after 23 years with The Sun

Mystic Meg’s Final Reading

After nearly 23 years of delivering daily horoscopes in The Sun, Mystic Meg has passed away. The famous astrologer was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington last month with flu. She died early this morning at 3:45 a.m.

Britain’s Most Famous Astrologer

Her long-time agent, Dave Shapland, told The Sun: “She was, without a doubt, Britain’s most famous astrologer by a million miles. Nobody could compete with Meg in that regard. Millions of people here and around the world followed her.”

He added, “She became part of the English language. If a politician, celebrity, or ordinary person is challenged with a tough question, they often reply, ‘Who do you think I am, Mystic Meg?’ That shows her impact.”

The Sun Mourns a Legend

The Sun’s editor, Victoria Newton, shared heartfelt words: “This is heartbreaking news. We’ve lost a symbol. Meg, our brilliant and incomparable star, was synonymous with The Sun – she was a true legend. We adored her, as did our readers.”

Victoria recalled a fun flashback: “One of my favourite Meg memories is when all the Spice Girls came to the office at their peak – instead of the planned tour, all they wanted was to meet Mystic Meg. When Victoria Beckham is only interested in you, you know you’re a true icon.”

She added, “Goodbye, Meg. We sincerely appreciate everything you’ve done. Our hearts go out to her family and friends.”

From Lancashire to National Stardom

Mystic Meg was born in Accrington, Lancashire, on July 27, 1942. She earned a teaching diploma from Leeds University but veered into journalism instead. Meg worked as a subeditor at a women’s magazine and wrote erotic stories for the now-defunct News of the World.

Her big break came in 1989 when she started phone horoscope readings, quickly becoming a household name. During the 1990s, she appeared on the National Lottery TV show, using her crystal ball to predict jackpot winners.

Mystic Meg’s horoscopes captivated the nation – and sparked plenty of reaction. She famously predicted that Manchester United would lose the 1995 FA Cup final to Everton, prompting a flood of letters from fiery Reds fans.
