Jewellery thief locked out grim 90-year-old victim before being jailed
Michael Patrick Cawley, 26, was slammed with a 15-month prison sentence at Southampton Crown Court yesterday (March 16) for a brazen burglary in Kidlington.
Burglar Locks Out 90-Year-Old Victim
The crime took place between 9pm on January 26, 2022, and 7.45am the next morning at a home on Catherine Way. The elderly victim, in his 90s, found himself locked out as the door chain was latched from the inside.
Police Find Stolen Jewellery and Key Evidence
Officers forced entry and discovered a haul of stolen jewellery. Crucially, DNA evidence found on a rear window matched Cawley. Cell site data also placed him in Hedge End on the day of the offence, sealing his fate.
Guilty Plea Ahead of Sentencing
Cawley confessed to the burglary at Southampton Magistrates Court on February 3, 2023, before receiving his custodial sentence this week.
