Lorry Driver Jailed Over Cyclist’s Death in Shocking Crash
Kevin Allen, 69, a lorry driver from Mansfield, has been slammed with a prison sentence of four years and nine months. This follows the fatal crash that killed Dr Marta Krawiec, a 41-year-old paediatrician, on August 4, 2021, at a busy Holborn junction in Southampton Row and Theobalds Road.
Fatal Mistake: Late Indication Leads to Tragedy
Dr Krawiec was cycling straight ahead when Allen, driving his lorry, failed to signal his left turn properly. Instead, he only indicated after starting to turn, dragging the doctor under his vehicle. Despite her desperate cries, she tragically died at the scene.
Prosecutor Paul Casey said Allen’s late signal was the critical cause of the crash. “There were no other factors—no bad weather or vehicle issues—just Allen’s mistake,” he confirmed.
Driver’s Defence Falls Flat
Allen claimed he needed to use the middle lane due to the length of his vehicle while delivering steel to a nearby site. But he admitted he didn’t check blind spots or signal in time, sealing his fate.
Lifetime Ban Adds to the Punishment
On top of the prison term, the judge slapped Allen with a driving ban of three years and six months. The sentence sends a strong message about the deadly consequences of careless driving and offers some justice for Dr Krawiec’s grieving family and community.
