Suspected Arson at Former Portlands Club in Northfleet Under Investigation

Police are investigating a suspected arson at the derelict former Portlands club in Northfleet, following a fire that broke out yesterday (September 29) around 5:26 pm.

Six fire engines, along with a height vehicle, were dispatched to the scene on High Street to tackle the blaze. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked to bring the fire under control, using high-pressure hose reel jets and main water jets. The height vehicle was used to tackle the fire from above, allowing crews to fully extinguish the flames and secure the building.

Firefighters continued their efforts through the evening, successfully extinguishing the blaze by 10:15 pm. No injuries were reported.

Kent Police officers were present at the scene to assist with traffic management, and the public was advised to avoid the area while emergency services worked to control the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing. Officers are treating the incident as suspected arson and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Officers are investigating a suspected arson at a derelict property in Northfleet High Street. Patrols were called to the incident at 5:45 pm on Sunday, 29 September 2024, where they assisted with traffic control while fire crews extinguished the blaze. An investigation into the incident is underway, and anyone with information that may assist is urged to call Kent Police on 01474 366149, quoting reference 46/165333/24.
