Blaze Breaks Out at Abandoned Portlands Club
A major fire tore through the long-abandoned Portlands club on Northfleet High Street yesterday evening. Flames erupted at 5:26 pm, sparking a massive emergency response.
Six Fire Engines Battle Flames into the Night
Firefighters arrived in force with six engines and a height vehicle. Crews in breathing apparatus launched a full-scale assault using high-pressure hose reels and main jets. The height vehicle took aim from above to douse hard-to-reach flames. The intense battle raged for hours, but the blaze was finally out by 10:15 pm. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Kent Police On Scene, Warn Public to Stay Clear
Kent Police quickly moved in to manage traffic and keep onlookers at bay as emergency teams worked. Officers say the cause of the fire is unknown but are treating the incident as suspected arson. They urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.
“Officers are investigating a suspected arson at a derelict property in Northfleet High Street. Patrols were called to the incident at 5:45 pm on Sunday, 29 September 2024, where they assisted with traffic control while fire crews extinguished the blaze,” said a Kent Police spokesperson. “An investigation is underway, and anyone with information is urged to call Kent Police on 01474 366149, quoting reference 46/165333/24.”
