Prison Officer Jailed for Secret Affair with Inmate at HMP Five Wells
A prison officer has been sentenced to 12 months behind bars after admitting to an inappropriate relationship with a prisoner at HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire.
Toni Cole’s Steamy Messages and Brazen Behaviour
Toni Cole, 29, from Wellingborough, sparked shock after exchanging thousands of flirtatious and explicit texts with a 28-year-old inmate. The damning evidence came to light during a routine check on an unauthorised overtime shift on January 25, 2023.
CCTV footage showed Cole spending excessive time with the prisoner, even sitting on his lap and wrapping her arm around him. An internal probe uncovered 4,431 calls and messages, 18 video chats, and a revealing photo of Cole in a purple thong.
She confessed to kissing the inmate multiple times and promised to tip him off about cell searches. Cole initially denied the full extent but later pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office on February 7.
Judge Slams Betrayal of Trust – 12 Months Inside
On February 13, Northampton Crown Court sentenced Cole to 12 months in prison and a £187 victim surcharge. The judge condemned her conduct for jeopardising prison safety and breaching professional ethics.
“This relationship not only broke the rules but undermined the security of the entire prison,” the judge said.
Police and Public Outraged at Major Security Breach
Detective Inspector Richard Cornell from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit blasted Cole’s actions as a “betrayal of trust.”
“She put herself, her colleagues, and inmates at risk. Most prison staff serve with honour, and we hope this sentence sends a clear warning to anyone tempted to break the law,” he said.
HMP Five Wells, a Category C prison opened in 2022, is under scrutiny after the scandal. The Prison and Probation Service has launched an internal review to prevent such security lapses in future.
Anger from Locals as Cole Faces Jail
Local resident James Holloway said, “Prison officers must uphold the law, not exploit their position for personal gain. This is absolutely appalling.”
Cole will serve her sentence as the prison system rethinks safeguards to stop this kind of misconduct happening again.
