Manchester Arena Bomb Plotter Hashem Abedi Charged with Attempted Murder Over Prison Attack

Hashem Abedi, the Manchester Arena bomb plotter serving a life sentence, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder following an alleged attack on prison officers at HMP Frankland in April.

The incident, which took place on 12 April 2025, left four prison officers injured. It is being jointly investigated by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and Durham Constabulary.

Abedi, 28, has also been charged with:

  • One count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm

  • One count of unauthorised possession of a knife or offensive weapon

He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 18 September. Abedi remains in prison.

No further details about the nature of the injuries or the alleged weapon have been released at this stage.

Abedi was convicted in 2020 for his role in the Manchester Arena bombing of May 2017, which killed 22 people and injured hundreds. He is serving a minimum term of 55 years.
