Penguin Tragedy at Marwell Zoo as Bird Flu Spreads
Marwell Wildlife has confirmed a shocking outbreak of avian influenza after several of their penguins tested positive – and sadly died from the deadly virus.
Strict DEFRA Rules Kick In
In a desperate bid to halt the deadly spread, DEFRA slammed new rules into place from 7pm on December 5, 2022. These ban the movement of poultry, captive birds, eggs, and related materials in infected zones. Some low-risk activities might be allowed, but only under tight licence controls.
Zoo Steps Up Biosecurity Measures
Marwell Zoo boss Maxwell said they’re working hand-in-hand with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and DEFRA. “All necessary biosecurity measures are in place,” he confirmed, promising safety for the remaining birds.
The zoo remains open for daytime visits and the Glow Marwell evening event. But visitors can’t access the Energy For Life: Tropical and walkthrough aviaries to protect other birds. Flamingos have been sheltered under covers, and penguins are now off-show.
Precautions like foot dips for guests are unchanged while the investigation continues. Maxwell thanked the animal and veterinary teams for their tireless efforts in safeguarding the creatures’ health.
