Roads Policing officers from Hampshire Police closed the M27 between Eastleigh Airport Junction 5 and Hamble Junction 8 after concerned drivers contacted them after seeing a figure hanging over bridge.
Traffic was diverted off the motorway by traffic officer from Highways England in both directions via the exit and entry slip road at Junction 5 and Junction 8. All six lanes were closed whilst officers dealt with the incident.
A police spokesman at the scene said: ‘We are working hard to resolve the situation but to ensure the safety of the person and the public it is necessary to keep the motorway closed.
‘We trained police officers communicating with the person in order to reach a safe conclusion but this may take some time. We will continue to keep the public updated and will of course reopen the road as soon as possible.’
The spokesman went on to say: ‘The Highways Agency traffic officers are dealing with the diversion routes and trained police officers are communicating with the person in order to reach a safe conclusion.’
Specialist officers could be seen speaking to distressed person who was sat on the top of the bridge with their legs over the para-pit.
