A call was received around 12.30pm to reports of a man who had disappeared while swimming. While on the beach, two men were found to have gone into cardiac arrest having got into difficulty in the sea. Both men were given CPR by police officers before ambulance services were on the scene. Both men were then flown by helicopter to the William Harvey Hospital in Kent where they remain in a serious but stable condition.

Inspector Mark Evans said: “We are working to establish who these two men are and trace their family and friends. We are continuing to work with the RNLI and the Coastguard to recover a body that was spotted by a local surf club.

“We are unable to confirm the identity of the body but are not looking for any other persons. Identification will take place at a later date.”

Sussex Police went on to say that members of the surfing club attempted to give the man CPR which was then taken over by the Coastguard and Paramedics without success.

Police wrapped the body in a bag before using a 4×4 to recover it to a waiting ambulance.

“It seems this has been three people who have got into trouble while swimming with the changing tides and coastline.”
