isle of wight drink driver escapes jail after river medina crash

Magistrates have taken pity on a Shanklin drink driver who escaped death when her car ploughed over a bridge and into the River Medina last month.

The 29 year old estate agent Lucy Wilton from Northcliff Gardens, Shanklin, appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates in Newport this morning to face drink driving charges after her car carried down the embank and crashed into the river Medina.

The court heard that Wilton who had to be pulled from the river by emergency crews was four times the drink drive limit when her company Vauxhall Corsa left the carriageway before ending up in the River Medina in the heart of Newport.

The court heard that actions by those attending the incident that night may have just saved her life.

Magistrate Ann Evans said: “You were lucky not to have been seriously injured or killed — or worse still, how close you were to killing someone
Wilton was handed an eight week prison sentence suspended 12-month suspended for drink driving and a £200 fine. She was also banned from driving for 32 months.
