Nottinghamshire’s Famous Fire-Hound Dexter Passes Away

Hero Dog Sniffed Out Fires Across Four Counties

Tragic news from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue as Dexter, their legendary fire investigation Cocker Spaniel, has died. This loyal canine was a true hero, sniffing out the causes of fires and saving lives across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Lincolnshire for nearly a decade.

Dexter started training at just 16 weeks old and launched his career in 2015. Nicknamed the busiest dog in the business, he attended up to 200 fire scenes a year, helping to protect homes and communities throughout the East Midlands with his expert nose.

Dave & Dexter: Fire Service’s Unbeatable Duo

Dave Coss, a fire dog handler since 2000, teamed up with Dexter for seven years. This was Dave’s third fire investigation dog. The pair officially retired Dexter in 2023 but returned briefly to the job, proving their unshakeable dedication to the fire service.

Dave has been part of Derbyshire Fire and Rescue since 1992 and continues his work with other pups Ginny, Tim, and Barney.

Heartfelt Tribute from Handler Dave Coss

“I’ve been really touched by all the support and kind messages. It shows just how much people care – not just in Nottinghamshire but across the entire fire service family. I didn’t realise how many lives Dexter had touched,” said Dave.

More than just a working dog, Dexter was a beloved character who brightened the lives of everyone he met. His legacy will live on in the hearts of the fire service and the communities he fiercely protected.

Our thoughts are with Dave and all who knew Dexter. His paw prints will never be forgotten.
