Fire Fury at New Cross Flat Sparks Police Explosion Drama
Four fire engines and 25 firefighters rushed to a blazing flat above a shop on Batavia Mews, New Cross, after an explosion tore through what is believed to be a drugs factory. A police officer suffered burns and was rushed to hospital.
Flat Engulfed as Meth Lab Suspected
Most of a five-room flat on the third floor was engulfed in flames. Station Commander James Ryan confirmed the chaos, saying: “The A2 New Cross Road, from the junction of Lewisham Way to New Cross Gate railway station, was closed and has now reopened but motorists should avoid the area due to disruption.”
The London Fire Brigade received the call at 1:34pm. Fire crews from New Cross, Deptford, Old Kent Road, and Lewisham stations fought the blaze.
Explosion Rocks Police on Scene
Witnesses say the fire was sparked by a meth lab inside the flat. Police were called at 1:32pm and heard an explosion as they entered. One female officer was burned and taken to a south London hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 40-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and grievous bodily harm. He has been taken to a south London police station.
New Cross Road Shut Amid Ongoing Investigation
