Chaos unfolded in East London after a late-night blaze ripped through a residential block, sparked by an electric bike. The fire broke out at Bradbeer House on Cornwall Avenue, Bethnal Green, just before midnight on Wednesday, 9 April 2025. Firefighters, paramedics and police rushed to the scene after emergency calls at around 11.30pm.
Firefighter Hurt in Daring Rescue
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed one firefighter was injured battling the fierce flames while rescuing trapped tenants. The firefighter was taken to hospital, with their condition still unknown. Witnesses reported thick smoke pouring from the 18-flat block as crews worked tirelessly through the night to evacuate residents and douse the fire.
Electric Bike Sparks Rapid Fire
Initial reports suggest the blaze started from an e-bike, possibly charging at the time. The fire quickly engulfed parts of the residential building, triggering a full emergency response. Police were seen pulling residents from the smoke-filled building as flames raged on.
“We were called to a fire at Bradbeer House, Cornwall Avenue, shortly before midnight on 9 April. An electric bike is believed to be involved, though a full investigation is underway. One firefighter was injured during rescue operations and has been taken to hospital,” said an LFB spokesperson.
Rising Fears Over E-Bike Battery Safety
This incident has renewed worries over electric bike safety, especially regarding low-quality batteries and unofficial chargers. LFB data reveals a sharp increase in e-bike and e-scooter fires, with over 150 reported in London in 2024 alone.
“Scary scenes in Cornwall Avenue last night. Hope the firefighter is okay. These e-bike fires are becoming way too common,” posted a local on social media.
Safety Tips & Ongoing Support
Residents are urged to follow LFB’s safety advice:
- Never block fire exits with e-bikes or e-scooters.
- Always use the charger supplied with the device.
- Charge batteries away from escape routes and while awake.
Authorities continue to assess damage and assist displaced people. The London Fire Brigade will release a formal statement later. Anyone with information or videos of the fire is urged to contact local authorities.
