Sixty Firefighters and Helicopter Battle Huge Ventnor Blaze
A massive fire has erupted near the Old Park Hotel in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, sparking a major emergency response this afternoon.
Alert Raised by Local Sailor
The fire service was rushed into action after a sailor spotted thick smoke and flames in the St Lawrence area. Fire crews from Shanklin were first on scene to investigate the blaze.
Massive Fire Response Underway
- Six fire pumps deployed from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin, and East Cowes
- Approx. 60 firefighters and officers currently fighting the fire
- Two water carriers and 15 lengths of hose in use to control spreading flames
The fire has ignited undergrowth within a wooded area roughly 50 metres square and is rapidly spreading uphill.
Air Support Called In Amid Tough Terrain
Access to the blaze is severely hampered due to remote location and damaged roads around Undercliffe Drive. Fire chiefs have scrambled the National Air Support from Bournemouth to help pinpoint the fire and speed up efforts.
Hotel Guests Warned to Stay Indoors
Guests at the Old Park Hotel have been advised to remain inside for their safety as crews battle the extensive fire.
