Christmas Channel Rescue: 68 Migrants Brought to UK Shores

On Christmas Day, 68 migrants, including young children and a screaming baby girl, were rescued from perilous Channel crossings in freezing rain. The daring rescues unfolded just before midnight, as the RNLI Dover lifeboat and Border Force stepped in to save lives.

Multiple Rescues Amid Stormy Seas

  • Thirty-five people aboard a dinghy between Dunkirk and Calais were aided by Border Force shortly before midnight.
  • An additional 33 migrants, including families from Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, landed in Dover around midnight.
  • In a separate French waters incident, nine migrants were saved after their boat’s engine failed and have since reached UK shores.

All adults are now under immigration interviews. Children will be placed in social services care following thorough medical checks. The Border Force, supported by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, remains vigilant in the busy Channel waters.

Government Crackdown on Channel Crossings

Tom Pursglove MP, Minister for Justice and Tackling Illegal Migration, said: “Seeking asylum for protection should not involve criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people or risking lives crossing the Channel. Asylum must be claimed in the first safe country reached.”

“Our government is taking tough action to end the abuse of our immigration laws through the New Plan for Immigration. The Nationality and Borders Bill will make illegal entry a criminal offence with life sentences for facilitators, and give Border Force stronger powers to stop and redirect vessels.”

“We’re pushing these vital reforms through Parliament to protect the public and restore order to a broken system.”

Rising Tensions Amid Migrant Crisis

Christmas Day’s rescues follow record migrant crossings in recent months, alongside the tragic loss of 27 lives that remain under investigation. Evidence points to organised criminal gangs orchestrating the dangerous Channel attempts.

UK and French authorities continue joint efforts targeting these gangs to prevent further tragedies and illegal entries. Meanwhile, Border Force has deployed extra resources to manage the surge in migrant boats as winter storms lash the Channel.

  • On 25 December 2021, UK authorities rescued or intercepted 67 migrants in two separate events.
  • French authorities intercepted one event, with numbers prevented from reaching the UK still unknown.

The drama of desperate crossings and heroic rescues paints a grim picture of the ongoing migrant crisis that refuses to pause—even on Christmas Day.
