Met Police Chief Sounds Alarm on Rising Abuse Against Officers
The head of the Metropolitan Police has hit out at the surge in abuse and harassment aimed at officers, both online and face-to-face.
Officers Caught in Toxic Crossfire of Public Opinion
The Chief lamented a worrying trend: cops are being slammed from all sides. They’re branded both “woke” and “fascist” for the same actions, leaving many officers unfairly targeted amid heated public debates.
Highlighting a recent case, he revealed how an officer was bombarded with malicious online abuse after posting a photo of herself at a firearms outreach event on International Women’s Day. Instead of backing her efforts to broaden her skills, she was met with vicious criticism.
“She shows the best of the Met,” the Chief said, praising her courage and dedication despite the backlash.
Violence on the Streets — Officers Paying the Price
But the abuse isn’t just online. In a shocking 48-hour stretch, 12 officers were hurt on duty. Among the injuries: one was hit on the head with a bottle, another stabbed in the hand.
At a recent football match, officers faced violent disorder from unruly fans — only to be condemned rather than commended for handling the chaos.
High Stakes, High Pressure: Why Officers Need Support
The Chief stressed policing is a tough gig. Officers must make split-second calls under intense pressure and endless scrutiny, often with incomplete information.
Despite all this, he praised their resilience and commitment to protecting the community.
While most Londoners offer support, he called for more understanding and tougher consequences for those who abuse officers.
“We stand by our officers and will keep pushing the government to ensure they have the support they deserve,” the Chief vowed.
