Vanished 32 Years Ago: Family Still Desperate for Missing Thamesmead Man

Last Seen: 21-Year-Old Ian Bushell Disappears Without a Trace

Ian Bushell, from Thamesmead, was last spotted by his father on Wednesday, 20 January 1988, aged just 21. Weeks later, on 16 February, his father returned to Ian’s flat but found no answer. Letting himself in, he discovered the flat intact — clothes, wallet, and keys untouched — but Ian was nowhere to be found.

Despite a frantic police search and repeated public appeals, Ian has remained missing for over three decades. He would have turned 54 today.

Family Pleads for Answers After Decades of Heartache

Ian’s sister, Rosalind, shared her pain: “I was only 16 when my big brother vanished, and I have thought about him every single day for the past 32 years. Our dad died two years after Ian disappeared, and Mum passed away in 2010. Now it’s just me left. I’d give anything to have Ian back or to discover what happened to him.”

Police believe Ian was troubled at his last sighting, but the cause remains a mystery.

Cold Case and Unconfirmed Sightings

Two unconfirmed sightings of Ian were reported in northeast London, the latest in 2007. However, these leads failed to crack the mystery or bring Ian home.

PC Greg Humphrey of the South East Missing Person Unit said: “Ian’s family haven’t seen him since the late 1980s, but their pain and worry haven’t faded. His parents sadly died without knowing his fate. We want to find answers for his sister now.”

He added: “We know of two sightings more than a decade ago, but since then the trail’s gone cold. We urge anyone who has seen or heard anything about Ian to come forward. No detail is too small; it could be the clue we need.”
