MOBO-Nominated Rapper Killed by Police After Intense South London Car Chase
A MOBO-nominated rapper and soon-to-be dad was shot dead by armed police following a high-speed car chase in south London. The drama unfolded late Monday night in Streatham when the suspect tried to ram police vehicles.
Chris Kaba Identified as Victim in Armed Police Shooting
Friends have named the victim as Chris Kaba, a Drill artist in his twenties. The chilling incident happened around 10 p.m. in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill. Police attempted a “tactical contact” to stop Kaba’s vehicle during the pursuit.
Despite emergency treatment at the scene and a rush to hospital via London Air Ambulance, Kaba died early Tuesday morning from a gunshot wound.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Tragedy
- The pursuit involved at least five police cars and a Met helicopter tracking Kaba’s black Audi.
- Police confirmed specialist firearms officers pursued the suspect vehicle but declined further details.
- The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an inquiry into the shooting.
Witnesses Describe Tense Final Moments
Eyewitnesses saw the Audi boxed in by three police cars. One witness said, “A car was being chased down our street with a police helicopter overhead. Two vehicles collided with a loud bang – one was police, the other the suspect’s car.”
“Armed cops jumped out and ordered the man to get out of the car. It happened at least a dozen times. The guy had plenty of chances to stop but instead he drove into a police car, then reversed. I heard one shot. He could have killed an officer with that car.”
Another resident described the chaos:
“Cars sped into our road, a helicopter hovered. Then a bang and armed cops everywhere. People were doing CPR on someone on the ground. The blue lights flashing were terrifying.”
Local minister Helen Smith, living nearby, added: “I saw the blue lights and learned someone was shot. I’m devastated and praying for him and his family.”
Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation
The Met confirmed the shooting happened at 9:51 p.m. after specialist officers made contact to stop the vehicle. Following the discharge of a firearm, a man in his twenties was seriously wounded.
First aid was given by officers before emergency crews arrived. Despite their efforts, he died at hospital shortly after midnight. The victim’s next of kin have been informed.
The Met has set up cordons and road closures while the investigation continues. The IOPC is leading the independent probe and said, “Our thoughts and sympathies are with all affected by this terrible incident. Our investigation is still in its early stages.”
