Fake Social Media Profiles: Watch Out for Heartbreak and Heists
Fake profiles are everywhere on social media and they’re trapping people daily. Lawyer Lars Olofsson and behavioural scientist Nina Jansdotter spill the dirt on scams and show you the warning signs before you get fleeced.
Romance Scams – Love Isn’t What It Seems
Scammers use fake profiles to lure victims into “romance scams” or “catfishing” schemes. They pretend to be your perfect match, but really, it’s a clever con to drain your bank account.
“You think you’ve met love, but you’re just getting robbed,” warns Jansdotter, author of Love Scam.
Many victims feel so humiliated, they stay silent. Jansdotter says these wormy fraudsters belong to slick international gangs who exploit your trust.
Investment Scams – Don’t Hand Over Your Cash
Fake profiles also prey on hopeful investors. Whether it’s traditional stocks or the booming world of cryptocurrencies, scammers push victims to invest huge sums, then vanish with the cash.
Olofsson reveals, “Every week I hear about people scammed via crypto schemes tipped off by phony profiles.”
With weak laws and cross-border crime, these scams are booming with little fear of punishment.
Spotting a Fake Profile: Red Flags You Can’t Ignore
- Newly created accounts: Many fakes are brand new – a classic tell.
- Limited activity: Few posts, likes, or genuine interactions hint at a sham.
- Stolen photos: Perfect model shots? Google image search might expose imposters.
- Wrong info: Check if their job history or location matches reality.
Always be sceptical when strangers online bring up money – whether borrowing or investing.
