Massive Spike in Drink and Drug Driving Arrests Over Festive Season in Merseyside
Merseyside Police have slammed a shocking rise in drink and drug driving arrests this Christmas. Operation Limit, their nationwide crackdown running from November 20 to January 1, saw a jaw-dropping increase in offenders caught behind the wheel while under the influence.
Over 600 Drivers Busted in Festive Crackdown
During the operation, officers made 191 drink driving arrests and a staggering 469 drug driving arrests — up by 123 compared to last year. Across 2023, Merseyside Police nabbed 2,730 drug drivers, averaging 227 arrests every month or 53 a week.
Chief Inspector Slams “Astonishingly Selfish” Drug Drivers
Stuart McIver, Roads Policing Chief Inspector, blasted those who drive after using recreational drugs. He said: “It’s astonishingly selfish, and there’s no excuse for it.” He warned the public about the deadly risks and called for drug driving to carry the same stigma as drink driving.
Merseyside Police Ready to Keep Cracking Down
Although Operation Limit has ended, officers aren’t easing up. McIver promised the fight against drug driving will continue all year round, with zero tolerance for offenders.
Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell also condemned the reckless behaviour, calling it “selfish and completely unacceptable”. She praised police efforts but warned that anyone risking lives by driving under the influence will be caught and punished.
Strict Penalties Await Drivers Who Risk It All
Merseyside Police remind the public that driving under the influence of illegal or prescription drugs that impair ability is a criminal offence. Convictions can bring up to six months in prison, unlimited fines, and a driving ban for up to 12 months.
The message is clear: no excuse for drink or drug driving. Keep our roads safe by making responsible choices.
