Speeding Volvo Driver Jailed for 10 Years After Fatal 89mph Crash in 30 Zone
Anthony Riley, 32, lost control of a stolen Volvo XC90 while smashing through a 30mph zone at 89mph. The terrifying crash killed his front-seat passenger instantly. Today, Riley was slammed with a decade behind bars for causing death by dangerous driving.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Tragedy
The horrific smash happened on Hawton Road, Newark, just after 9am on 28 August. Police were already hunting the Volvo, stolen earlier that day from a driveway, when they spotted Riley behind the wheel. Despite flashing blue lights, Riley floored it, leading officers on a dangerous pursuit.
Investigators pieced together chilling dashcam and CCTV footage showing Riley hurtling along at nearly 90mph—three times the speed limit—before losing control and smashing into a tree. The wild ride left him a “considerable distance” ahead of pursuing officers.
Passenger Dies at Scene, Riley Survives with Injuries
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, pulling Riley from the wreck with broken ribs and a concussion. His passenger, 35-year-old Mark Hunter from Mapperley, was freed by firefighters but tragically died at the scene.
Repeat Offender Faces Justice
Riley, from Forest Road, Clipstone, has a troubling history, with a suspended sentence and driving ban from 2021 after dangerous and drink-driving offences. Following his arrest, he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, and aggravated vehicle taking.
He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court today to 10 years in prison, with no extra penalties for the other offences. Riley will serve two-thirds of his term before release on licence. A 10-year driving ban also kicks in immediately, including an extended test before he can hit the road again.
Judge and Police Condemn Ruthless Crime
“You put your foot down as hard as you possibly could. You did 89mph in a 30 limit – the consequences were inevitable and a man was killed,” said Judge Stuart Rafferty KC. “The cruel irony is the dangerous driver walks away but the passenger’s life ends.”
Nottinghamshire Police’s Sgt Mark Baker slammed Riley’s “reckless” actions. “He gave no thought to the safety of his passenger or the public. The terrible result is a lost life. He will live with the consequences for the rest of his life.”
