Scaffolders Narrowly Escape Injury as Lorry Trailer Tears Into Work Van
Two scaffolders lucked out and escaped serious injury when a lorry trailer came loose, smashing into their van — and two parked cars — while they were having lunch.
Trailer Breaks Free, Hits Work Van and Parked Cars
The trailer uncoupled itself on a steep uphill stretch and crashed into the rear of the workers’ van, a Rover, and a BMW. The pair were inside the van, enjoying a break near a new development site, Queen Place on Farnham Road, Guildford, when disaster struck.
One worker was rushed to Royal Surrey Hospital with an eye injury. “It sounded like a bomb going off as the trailer ploughed into us,” one of the shaken workers said. “We are very lucky to have escaped serious harm.”
Road Closure and Investigation Underway
Surrey Roads Policing officers have shut a large section of Farnham Road outside Farnham Hospital, part of the busy A31, following the crash. Vehicle examiners from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency are probing the tractor unit and trailer to find out why the trailer failed.
The lorry driver, a Romanian, remains in shock. He told police the load was bound for Alton. He’s cooperating and hasn’t been arrested.
Traffic Chaos Expected
The road closure is likely to last for hours as investigators and recovery teams work to clear the wreckage. Drivers are warned to seek alternative routes while local diversions are in place.
