Smart Devices Turned Nightmares in UK Homes as Tech Abuse Soars
Everyday Gadgets Weaponised by Abusers
What was once seen as a tech boon — baby monitors, smart speakers, and other connected devices — is now a chilling tool for domestic abuse. MPs warn that these gadgets are being hijacked for surveillance, harassment, and control. Victims face a hidden digital threat inside their own homes.
Tech Abuse Skyrockets as Connectivity Grows
With the average UK household sporting nine connected devices and predictions of 24 billion worldwide by 2050, tech abuse is exploding. A Culture, Media and Sport Committee report reveals that most domestic abuse cases now feature cyber tactics. Abusers use spyware to track victims, record private moments, and seize photos — taking terror to a new, invasive level.
Staggering Stats from Refuge and Experts
- 59% of women and children helped by Refuge in 2020 faced tech-related abuse.
- Some organisations report rates as high as 75% to 100%, says Dr Leonie Tanczer from University College London.
Dr Tanczer revealed some victims unwittingly stay linked to streaming accounts even after fleeing, allowing abusers to pinpoint their location. Even safe shelters aren’t free from tech’s dark reach.
Calls for Action: No Quick Fix, But Urgent Change Needed
The committee admits there’s no “silver bullet” but demands urgent government action. Recommendations include tougher criminal justice responses, ramped-up public awareness, and stronger industry cooperation to fight this digital menace.
