Jury Trials Set to Restart in UK Courts Amid Covid Safety Measures
The UK justice system has been put to the test during the coronavirus crisis – but courts have refused to stall. Domestic Abuse Protection Orders and Child Protection Orders kept safeguarding the vulnerable even at the height of the pandemic.
Remote Hearings Soar as Courts Stay Open Nationwide
Thanks to a tech overhaul, around 90% of hearings were conducted via audio and video by April. A total of 159 priority courts remained open from Tyneside to Truro and Cardiff to Kent, sticking strictly to public safety rules — though jury trials were still paused.
Trial by Jury Returns—Starting with London and Cardiff
Now, with the green light from Public Health England and Public Health Wales, limited jury trials will begin again at courts including the Old Bailey and Cardiff Crown Court. Social distancing and safety protocols will be tightly enforced.
These phased trials will help courts figure out how to safely expand jury proceedings as coronavirus conditions evolve.
Gratitude to Justice Heroes Keeping Courts Running
“Any person who plays a part in a criminal trial – including victims, witnesses, jurors, and legal professionals – is making a huge contribution to society that is rightly recognised as an essential reason to leave their home,” said judicial officials.
The courts are rolling out protective measures for all involved to attend without undue risk. Huge thanks go to the Lord Chief Justice, judiciary, legal teams, and court staff for their grit and teamwork in driving justice forward safely during these challenging times.
