UK Government Drives Green Transport Revolution in Scotland

Transport Minister Richard Holden rolled into Scotland with a bold promise: boost connectivity, slash emissions, and turbocharge economic growth. His visit on 3 April 2023 put the spotlight on cutting-edge green tech and major infrastructure investments set to transform Scotland’s transport scene.

Hydrogen-Powered, Self-Driving Trucks Hit Glasgow Roads

In Glasgow, Holden checked out revolutionary hydrogen-fuelled, self-driving trucks backed by a £16 million government boost. These next-gen vehicles aim to make roads safer, raise productivity, and cut carbon emissions, all pushing the UK closer to its 2050 net-zero goal.

Massive £127 Million Investment to Reboot Ravenscraig Transport Links

Holden also toured Ravenscraig, where a hefty £127 million — joint-funded by the UK government, Scottish Government, and North Lanarkshire Council — is set to supercharge local transport. This cash splash will enhance connectivity between towns and cities, encourage cycling and walking, and create thousands of jobs.

Richard Holden said: “Innovation like this in Scotland will help the UK become a world-leading next-generation transport hub by protecting the environment and meeting our global ambitions. Boosting transport connections across the UK will grow the economy and ensure that everyone, no matter where they 1, has access to well-paid, high-quality jobs.”

Regeneration Efforts to Pump £626 Million into Local Economy

The Ravenscraig regeneration is tipped to create 4,600 construction jobs and inject £626 million into the local economy. This initiative forms part of the Glasgow Region City Deal, a giant £1 billion-plus infrastructure fund shared by UK and Scottish governments to transform Glasgow and its surroundings.

John Lamont, UK Government Minister for Scotland, said: “UK government investment is helping power Scotland into the fast lane of sustainable transport innovation and delivering improved connectivity – levelling up the UK and bringing communities closer together. From hydrogen-powered self-driving trucks, Ravenscraig’s revamped roads, rail, cycling and walking routes, to a new ferry for Fair Isle and a green transport hub in Dundee — we are improving journeys, boosting growth and protecting the environment. There’s more to do, and we will keep working with the Scottish Government and local partners to deliver what travellers want and businesses need.”

Boosting UK-Wide Transport Links to Rev Up Regional Growth

Minister Holden held talks with local businesses and communities, exploring improved road projects, rail upgrades, and domestic flights to better link Scotland with the rest of the UK. With 60% of people backing stronger transport links, Holden is also gearing up for visits to Northern Ireland and Wales, signalling a UK-wide push to level up transport and economy alike.
