Welsh rugby has lost a true giant. John Peter Rhys Williams, better known as J.P.R. Williams, passed away on January 8, 2024. Born on March 2, 1949, near Bridgend, Wales, Williams was a standout star during Wales’ Golden Era of rugby in the 1970s.
The Iconic Full-Back with a Flanker’s Heart
Famous for his fearless attacking style and trademark long sideburns with socks slung around his ankles, Williams was primarily a full-back but preferred playing flanker. His versatility and fearless approach made him a nightmare for opponents.
Williams earned 55 caps for Wales, captaining the side five times, and represented the British & Irish Lions in eight Tests. He starred for clubs including Bridgend, Welsh, and Tondu, and was key to Wales’ Grand Slam triumphs in 1971, 1976, and 1978.
A Genius on the Pitch and in the Clinic
Off the field, Williams was no less impressive. He forged a career as an orthopaedic surgeon, balancing medicine with rugby. Even after hanging up his boots, he stayed true to the game, serving as president of the Bridgend Ravens.
Before rugby fame, Williams showed his sporting prowess by winning the 1966 British Junior tennis title. He quickly made waves in rugby, debuting for Wales at just 19 in 1969.
International Hero and Humble Star
Williams never lost to England, scoring five tries in ten Tests against their fierce rivals. His performances for the Lions, including the famous 1971 series win over New Zealand, cemented his place in rugby royalty.
Despite his on-field success, Williams turned down the 1977 British Lions tour to New Zealand to focus on his medical career. His services to rugby earned him an MBE the same year.
