In a disturbing incident, two suspects have been charged following a reported robbery targeting a pensioner in Rainham.
The distressing event occurred on Monday, March 11, 2024, between 1pm and 1:10pm, in the High Street area. The victim, a woman in her 90s, was approached by a man and a woman who allegedly assaulted her while stealing her handbag.
Upon receiving the distressing call, officers swiftly responded to the scene. Approximately three hours later, two suspects were apprehended in connection with the incident.
Jerry Maughan, residing at Maya Place in New Southgate, London, and Mary-Jo Smith, of Caley Road in Tunbridge Wells, were both charged with robbery.
Mr. Maughan, aged 24, appeared before the Medway Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, March 13. He has been remanded and is scheduled to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on a date yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, Miss Smith, aged 21, has been conditionally bailed pending a hearing at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on April 26.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, prompting authorities to urge vigilance and caution, especially among vulnerable members of the community.
