Man Jailed Over Shocking Assault on Policeman After Crashing BMW
James Wilson, 33, of Albert Road, Hanham, was slammed with a hefty prison sentence after a violent rampage in Emersons Green. On Monday, August 22, a jury found him guilty of trying to cause grievous bodily harm, alongside a string of driving offences.
Crash and Chaos on Crescent
It all kicked off on December 22, 2017, around 5pm, when Wilson crashed his black BMW into several parked cars on 1 Crescent. He was spotted stumbling from the driver’s side door just as police arrived. PC Luke Watson was first on the scene and quickly realised Wilson was far from innocent.
Brutal Attack on Emergency Worker
During the arrest, Wilson launched a vicious attack. He tried to gouge PC Watson’s eye in a desperate bid to escape. Thankfully, backup officers pulled him off in time. PC Craig Waters also endured abuse during the chaos.
Harsh Sentence for Serious Offences
- Attempted grievous bodily harm
- Assault on emergency worker
- Driving while intoxicated or on drugs
- Refusal to provide breath specimen
- Driving without insurance
Wilson was jailed for seven years and four months after PC Watson suffered severe swelling and bruising around his eye, forcing him off duty for over two weeks. “The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and just how seriously the courts treat attacks on emergency workers,” said investigating officer PC Alex Higham.
“Violence against anyone, especially emergency personnel who protect and serve the public, will not be tolerated. PC Watson was extremely fortunate not to lose his eye – or worse – thanks to his colleagues’ quick actions.”
