Knife Attack on GM Police Officers Ends in Heroic Taser Takedown

Two Greater Manchester Police sergeants were left fighting for their lives after a routine moped stop exploded into a brutal knife attack. The terrifying incident on July 26 saw Sergeants Marc Foster and Tim Ansell caught off guard while supporting a routine chase.

Unprovoked Stabbing Leaves Officers Wounded

While speaking to witnesses, PS Foster was suddenly attacked from behind, a knife slashing towards his throat. His partner, PS Ansell, jumped in to help but was also brutally stabbed multiple times at the neck. The attacker showed no mercy, targeting both officers in a savage assault.

Quick-Thinking PC Wolstencroft Saves the Day

PC Marcus Wolstencroft, who had chased the suspect initially, stepped up with remarkable calm. His first Taser deployment failed, but training kicked in. Keeping his nerve, he fired again, this time incapacitating the attacker and allowing the officers to restrain and detain the dangerous man.

“His presence of mind was outstanding,” said Chief Superintendent Colette Rose. “He even apologised to bystanders for swearing in the heat of the moment.”

Lifesaving First Aid and Praises for Bravery

With PS Ansell seriously injured and bleeding heavily, PS Foster provided urgent first aid, plugging the wounds with his bare hands until help arrived. Both officers suffered slash wounds—PS Ansell needed surgery after a vein was cauterised and stitched.

Chief Superintendent Rose hailed the officers’ “heroic actions” for preventing further harm and safely removing a deranged attacker from the streets. Mike Peake, Chair of the Greater Manchester Police Federation, added:

“They showed incredible bravery under attack, risking their own lives to protect the public. Without their quick teamwork, it’s a miracle they survived.”

The attacker later pleaded guilty to attempted murder, confirming his deadly intent against police officers patrolling the community.
