Homeless Man Jailed for Brutal Murder of Flatmate in SW10

Mohammed Assri, 47, who had no fixed address, was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday, 28 January. He was found guilty of murdering James Dowdell after a violent attack in February 2020.

Frantic 999 Call Reveals Shocking Crime Scene

On 17 February 2020, Assri called police in a panic, claiming he returned to a flat in St Mark’s Grove, SW10, to find James dead. Emergency services arrived to find James with severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested Assri, who was found with James’s personal items, including his bank card and a large sum of blood-stained cash.

Manipulative Tenant Took Control Before Fatal Attack

Assri’s relationship with James was murky. He lied about his identity, claiming his name was Adam and James was his uncle.

Before moving in, Assri was homeless. Once inside James’s flat, he quickly took control, shutting out carers and taking over James’s finances. He used James’s Halifax debit card regularly and even pawned a valuable watch-strap belonging to James.

Assri tried to cover his tracks, lying about his whereabouts. He said he was at his sister’s house at 4.45pm that day and only returned later to perform CPR before calling an ambulance at 6.45pm. CCTV evidence proved otherwise, showing he was near his sister’s home 12 hours earlier, while James’s pacemaker recorded a failing heart nearly two hours before the 999 call.

Post-Mortem Exposes Brutality

The post-mortem revealed bruised wrists and defensive wounds on James’s hands. Cause of death: blunt force trauma and neck compression.

Assri claimed James’s injuries were self-inflicted from falling. Pathologists thoroughly disproved this.

Detective Inspector Maria Green said: “Assri is a violent and manipulative man who has taken no responsibility. He tried to dishonour James’s memory and delay justice, causing deep upset to the family.”

“This conviction sends a clear message – the Met is relentless in tackling violent crime in London.”

Family Speaks Out: ‘A Lying, Manipulative Murderer’

James’s mother said: “We expected a two-week trial, but it dragged on for six, manipulated by a liar thriving on attention. James’s body had over 60 injuries showing how courageously he fought for his life.”

“The blood splattered walls and devastated room tell the savage story. James was a giver, not a taker – unlike his murderer.”

“James was beginning to realise the danger but still held onto hope, saying, ‘Hopefully!’ when asked if he’d survive. Those words haunt us forever.”
