Ex-Sussex cop slammed with jail for dodging speeding fines by blaming parents

Seren Sriganesh locked up over fraud and cover-up

A former Sussex Police officer has been handed more than three years behind bars for trying to dodge penalty points by pinning three speeding offences on his own parents. Seren Sriganesh, just 23, appeared at Guildford Crown Court and was sentenced to three years and two months for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, fraud, and unlawfully accessing personal data.

Cover-up exposed by illegal police system hacks

Sriganesh joined Sussex Police in 2023, despite already carrying six penalty points on his licence—a detail he kept under wraps during recruitment. The court heard he falsely claimed his parents were the drivers in three speeding cases from 2020 to 2024. He compounded his crimes by hacking into Sussex Police’s internal computer systems to check details on one of the offences.

The crooked copper’s antics were flagged to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), triggering a full investigation. Before disciplinary action could take place, Sriganesh quit the Sussex force in October 2024. He had served in the Brighton and Hove policing division.

IOPC condemn ‘blatant abuse of power’

“The evidence gathered in this case was overwhelming. Sriganesh flagrantly and repeatedly broke the law for his own personal gain. His actions undermined the public’s trust and the integrity of policing,” said IOPC Director Emily Barry.

Along with his prison term, Sriganesh has also been slapped with a two-year driving ban.

Calls grow for tougher police vetting after scandal

The scandal has reignited fierce debate about vetting and rooting out misconduct in UK police forces. Campaigners demand stricter background checks before and after officers join the ranks. Sussex Police has yet to publicly comment on the case but is expected to launch an internal review.
