Tragic Sperm Whale Strands and Dies on Cleethorpes Beach
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) sprang into action on Good Friday after reports of a giant whale stranded at Cleethorpes near Grimsby. Witnesses saw the massive creature upright in the water, but by the time rescuers arrived, it lay helpless on its side.
Rescue Efforts Thwarted by Rising Tide
Working alongside HM Coastguard and a beach safety team, the charity quickly identified the whale to keep curious crowds at bay. But with tides rushing in fast, medics couldn’t safely reach the animal. As the whale slipped beneath the waves, CCTV footage captured by the safety team showed it had sadly passed away.
Male Sperm Whale Mystery Unfolds
- Experts suspect the whale was a male—female sperm whales rarely venture this far north.
- The last recorded female sperm whale in UK waters was spotted back in 2016.
- Sperm whales are the giants of the toothed whale world, growing up to 16 metres long.
The heartbreaking loss highlights the dangers marine giants face in UK waters — and the tireless work of rescue teams trying to save them.
