Man Dies After Police Chase Ends in Locked Waterway
Just after 1:40am on Wednesday, 20 December, police spotted a car on The Hyde, NW9. A man bolted from the vehicle and plunged into The Silkstream waterway, making for the far bank before collapsing.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Fences
Officers didn’t follow him into the water but raced around the edge to reach him. The collapse spot was fenced off, blocking any direct access despite their best efforts.
Fire Brigade and Paramedics Called In
London Fire Brigade arrived with specialist gear to assist, while first aid was given on the spot. The man, believed to be in his late 40s, was rushed to hospital by ambulance in critical condition but tragically died in the early hours.
Investigations and Support Underway
The man’s next of kin have been informed and are receiving specialist support. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have both been notified, as is standard after deaths involving police contact.
Commander Owain Richards, Met Frontline Policing, said:
“This is a very sad incident and my thoughts and condolences go out to the man’s family and all those affected.
“It is only right and proper that all the circumstances surrounding this incident are fully investigated and the Met police will fully cooperate with any inquiry.
“In the meantime, we will be speaking to our partners and the community to provide reassurance and provide as much information as we can.”
