County Armagh Man Charged in Grays Lorry Tragedy

A European Arrest Warrant was executed in Ireland today, Monday 20 April, tied to the Essex Police probe into the deaths of 39 Vietnamese nationals found in a lorry trailer in Grays last October. A 40-year-old man from County Armagh, Northern Ireland, faces 39 manslaughter charges alongside immigration offences. He is set to appear at Dublin’s High Court tomorrow, Tuesday 21 April.

Ongoing Investigation in One of Essex Police’s Biggest Cases

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Smith of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said: “Our investigation is ongoing, and we urge the public and media to avoid speculation. Everyone involved deserves a fair judicial process.”

He revealed the probe is among the most extensive in Essex Police history. Officers have been working around the clock to unravel what happened on 23 October 2019, showing solidarity with victims and their families.

The investigation team is collaborating with the National Crime Agency, Crown Prosecution Service, and police forces across Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany, and Vietnam.
