New Multi-Agency Emergency Vehicle Joins Newport Fire Station

A brand-new multi-agency emergency vehicle has landed at Maindee Fire Station in Newport. The 7.25-tonne Mitsubishi Canter can switch from road to rail, allowing emergency crews to smash through delays and reach railway incidents faster than ever.

Faster Rescues on the Railways

Designed in collaboration with Network Rail, South Wales Fire and Rescue, Welsh Ambulance Service, Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, and specialist engineers GOS Tool & Engineering from Blaenavon, the vehicle is tailor-made for rapid response. It carries vital life-saving kit and can access tricky rail locations — including the notorious 4.5-mile-long Severn Tunnel.

Network Rail’s Project Manager Robyn MacNamara explained, “The safety of our passengers is our priority. These vehicles will allow for a faster and more effective multi-agency emergency response.”

Local Experts Help Develop Life-Saving Tech

GOS Tool & Engineering, a local Blaenavon firm, helped craft this bespoke vehicle to meet the exact needs of emergency responders tackling rail incidents. Before going live, crews will train on the new rig to get up to speed.

Maindee Station Commander Gareth Evans hailed the addition, saying, “It’s clear the benefits it’ll bring including quicker response times and multi-agency cooperation.” He added the vehicle’s rail capability makes it a game-changer in accessing hard-to-reach spots to save lives and stop incidents escalating.

Ambulance Service Praises Vehicle’s Design and Impact

Clare Langshaw, Welsh Ambulance Service’s Operations Manager, who helped design the vehicle, said it addresses serious logistical challenges on the rails. “This unique design will make it quicker and easier to reach patients, deliver treatment, and hopefully save lives,” she said.

The vehicle will be joined by a second model being donated to Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue later this month, boosting emergency response capabilities across Wales and England inside the Severn Tunnel.
