Bag Snatchers Target Shoppers in Herne Bay: Police Issue Urgent Warning

Three Thefts in One Weekend

Kent Police reported three bag thefts in Herne Bay over the weekend of July 9 and 10. In each case, victims popped into shops, only to find their bags left open and purses gone when they returned.

Police Warn Shoppers to Stay Alert

Inspector Thomas Mepstead of Canterbury’s Community Safety Unit said these crimes are rare but warned locals to stay vigilant. “Shoppers should be cautious when out and about to avoid falling victim to opportunist thieves,” he said.

Simple Tips to Avoid Being Targeted

  • Never leave handbags unattended on prams, shopping trolleys, wheelchairs, or scooters.
  • Keep bags zipped and within sight at all times.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Use a purse chain if possible – it can deter thieves.
