Brutal Double Attack: Wayne Miller Leaves Man Dead in Sunderland
Wayne Miller, 32, savagely attacked 48-year-old Andrew Mather twice in one night before leaving him for dead inside his Sunderland home. The dad-of-three suffered fatal head injuries after Miller, who even changed his clothes between the attacks, launched a second, deadly assault on June 2.
Miller Calls 999 But Lies About Incident
The very next day, Miller rang 999 from a phone box, claiming he’d been in a fight but insisted Andrew was fine afterwards. He only expressed concern when Andrew didn’t answer his door. Emergency crews rushed to Andrew’s home on Aintree Road – but found him dead with severe head trauma and broken facial bones.
Self-Defence Claim Shot Down at Trial
Miller later handed himself in but denied murder, saying he acted in self-defence. After a six-day trial at Newcastle Crown Court, a jury saw through his excuses and found him guilty of murder. Miller remains in custody and will be sentenced on December 15.
“This was an appalling act of violence,” said Detective Inspector Graeme Barr. “Miller inflicted fatal injuries in two separate attacks. After the first, he even took a trophy photo of his victim before changing clothes and returning to deliver a final, fatal blow.”
“His actions were cold and sinister. We’re glad his self-defence claim has been dismissed. He’s a dangerous individual who won’t be on our streets again.”
“We hope today’s verdict brings some comfort to Mr Mather’s family. Violence won’t be tolerated in our communities.”
Neighbourhood Terror and CCTV Evidence
- Neighbours reported screams and shouting from Andrew’s home around 7.30pm on June 2.
- CCTV tracked Miller walking away around 9pm wearing shorts and boots.
- Less than an hour later, he returned in tracksuit bottoms and trainers—ready for a second attack.
- The next morning Miller’s 999 call raised suspicion, but it was too late for Andrew.
The court heard that feud between Miller’s girlfriend’s family and Andrew’s had sparked the deadly violence.
Wayne Miller will face sentencing on December 15 at Newcastle Crown Court for the murder of Andrew Mather.
