A shocking discovery on the M27 left commuters stunned today. A woman was found dead on the westbound carriageway between Junctions 11 and 12, near Fareham. Police were alerted just before 1:30pm after a body was spotted close to Downend Road Bridge.
A police spokesperson said, “We received a call at 1:27pm about a body on the carriageway between Junction 11 and 12 on the M27. Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.”
Rush Hour Chaos: M27 Westbound Closed for Hours
The tragedy brought the busy westbound M27 to a standstill. Authorities shut the motorway for several hours, causing massive rush hour tailbacks. The Highways Agency managed to reopen one lane by 2pm, but traffic remained snarled well into the afternoon. The eastbound side also slowed to a crawl as drivers tried to dodge delays.
Emergency Services Rush After Woman Reportedly Falls from Bridge
Paramedics raced to the scene after reports a woman fell from a bridge over the motorway at 1:26pm. The South Coast Ambulance Service deployed an Air Ambulance car, doctor, rapid response officer, and an ambulance straight away. A spokesman explained, “Unfortunately, the helicopter couldn’t fly due to poor weather conditions.”
Police and emergency teams remain on site as they investigate the heartbreaking incident.
