A 16-year-old boy has appeared at the Old Bailey charged with murdering 14-year-old Eghosa Ogbebor, who was shot dead in a Woolwich stairwell.

Fatal Shooting on Lord Warwick Street

Eghosa was found lifeless on April 2 after police were called to Lord Warwick Street at 3:40pm. The teenager accused of the killing appeared via video-link from HMP Felton. The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is alleged to have chased and shot Eghosa in the chest. The court heard Eghosa was also armed during the incident.

Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC said: “It was there at the top of the stairwell that the defendant aimed and fired at the victim, shooting him once in the chest, causing an injury from which he died.”

Police Investigation and Court Proceedings

  • The accused was first arrested on April 4 but released on bail.
  • He was re-arrested on April 9 and charged with murder the next day.
  • A six-week trial is provisionally set to begin on January 18, 2027.
  • The teenager is remanded in youth detention with a plea and trial prep hearing due July 3.

The Met Police confirmed their probe is ongoing. Several others, including a 16-year-old and a 19-year-old, have been arrested on suspicion of murder or assisting an offender but were released on bail.

Community and Family in Mourning

Friends and family laid tributes at the scene. One described the situation as “just awful,” while another commented, “It’s Easter and should be a time for celebration but they are grieving. It’s just awful.” London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the killing. He said: “My thoughts are with the family, friends and wider community in Woolwich following the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy. There is absolutely no place for this heartbreaking violence.” At Eghosa’s home in Abbey Wood, his aunt revealed he had told his mother he was going out to film a rap video. She told Metro:

“He loved music, he was so talented and lived for it. On the day he was shot, he had gone out to film a video with his friends. He never came back. His mother is broken. He was so young, he had his whole life ahead of him. He was just a boy.”
